Bronwen Vaughan-Evans - Home Is where the heart is

Home Is Where the Heart Is

12 June - 07 July 2008

Vaughan-Evans' mixed media works are created by layering white and black gesso on board. Historically used in icon painting, gesso was the preferred ground in the Renaissance due to the luminosity of the white surface which glowed through the layers of paint.

Images of ordinary people form the subject matter of Vaughan-Evans' high realist style paintings. These people, whom she interacts with on a daily basis, are juxtaposed with elements taken from their personal living environments and contexts; for example, a cityscape, a pattern, a telephone pole. The images are cut and scratched into the surface of the gesso; an act that subverts the traditions of western painting under which she has studied and also alludes to a conceptual process of excavation.

By way of this excavation the artist aims to reveal how the spaces that we occupy shape our identities on a personal and socio-political level.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 12 June @ 18h30 - 20h00

Concludes 07 July 2008
