Johannes Phokela
Johannes Phokela, born in Soweto in 1966, lives and works between South Africa and London, UK. He studied at a number of institutions, such as the Royal College of Art, Camberwell College of Art, St. Martin's College of Art, England and the Fuba Art Centre in South Africa.

Phokela has exhibited his work extensively, both locally and internationally. He has also paticipated in a number of workshops and received a variety of prestigious awards. His artistic practice includes printmaking, sculpture, drawing and painting. Thematically, his painting resembles that of the Old Dutch Masters such as Rubens, van Dyck and others. He uses elements from such paintings as resource material to take on what he perceives as Europe's grandiose history of art as a medium to convey values and ideals represented within a global context of cultural elitism.
