Mary Sibande

Artist Biography

Mary Sibande, born 1982, lives and works in Johannesburg. She obtained an Honours Degree in Fine Art at the University of Johannesburg in 2007. Sibande works in various media including painting, sculpture and photography. She has taken part in the Johannesburg Art City World Premiere Annual Exhibition project, titled ‘‘Long Live the Dead Queen’’, which premiered in June of 2010 to coincide with the 2010 World Cup on 19 giant building-wraps in the inner city.

Mary’s most recent group shows include: From Pierneef to Gugulactive from 1910 to 2010, Iziko South African National gallery, Cape Town (2010), The National Arts Festival in Grahamstown as the highlighted Artist, showcased at the Standard Bank Gallery at the Albany History Museum (June – July 2010) and l’Exposition du Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres, Dakar (Nov 2010 – December 2010). She is the recipient of a number of residencies and fellowships such as the Cite des Arts International, Paris, France, Kunst:raum Sylt Quelle, Sylt,Germany, Prohelvetia-IAAB, Basel, Switzerland and the Ampersand Foundation Fellowship, New York.

In 2011, Mary exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (March 19th – May 15th 2011), and at the ARS 11 exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Kiasma, in Finland. Sibande has been selected for a residencies at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Italy and the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. for 2012.
