Rodney Place lives and works in Johannesburg
and Warsaw. He
studied at the Architectural Association in London
in the 1970s and worked and taught as a multi-media artist for fifteen years
throughout the USA with
several solo shows in New York.
He returned to South Africa
in 1996. His multi-disciplinary and multi-media work focuses largely on art and
urbanism, whether as satirical commentary, activism, or permanent installation.
He works thematically with many different elements making up a project; from
fashion, to photography, drawing, painting and sculpture, to video and
performance works. 'Retreks' (1999 until 2002) explored emerging Johannesburg through four social viewpoints and Infections
of the Void, (begun 2002) bridges between the post -territories of South Africa and Central
Europe.
He has exhibited internationally with his work included in Habana and Dakar
Biennales, as well as in Africa Remix, curated by Simon Njami. Most recently Pole-Land,
a video/performance episode of Angels of Stealth, the Central European part of
Infections, was shown in-progress as part of Arte's Temps d Images Festival in
Paris and Warsaw.
