Sharlene Khan Press Release

What I look like, what I feel like is an exhibition of photographic mixed media works which feature staged photographic portraits of the artist in various settings and guises, which seek to question how she feels others view her against how she views herself.   Each artwork juxtaposes two images of the artist and questions portrayals of self and otherness within the contemporary urban environment thereby implicating her race, class, gender, education, religion and sexuality.  This conscious exploration of her identity examines the various masks one dons, consciously or sub-consciously on a daily basis as well as the stereotypical representations inflicted on a person inhabiting a racialised body in a specific socio-political and historical situation.
