Sharlene Khan, born 1977, graduated from the University of Durban with a BA degree in Fine Arts and completed her MA at the same institution in 2002. She also holds a second Masters degree from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
Khan has exhibited locally and internationally, and is extensively involved in various art related projects. The content of her work focuses predominantly on the socio-economic circumstances of ordinary people who live in African cities, but more specifically on street vendors and street trade in general. She works in various media, including painting and site-specific installations.
Khan is currently researching for two academic papers, one is based on the iconography of HIV/Aids Murals in Johannesburg and Durban and one is concerned with artistic representations of Winnie Mandela - a paper that will be presented at the School of Language and Literature Studies, Wits University in June. She is also working towards a solo exhibition at Gallery MOMO in September.
