Sharlene
Khan, born 1977 in Durban, graduated from the University of Durban-Westville
(Durban) with a BA in Fine Arts and completed her MA at the same institution in
2002. She holds a second Masters degree in Fine Arts from the University of
Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Khan has exhibited locally (Johannesburg,
Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria) and internationally (France, India, Switzerland,
USA, Germany, Sweden). The content of her work has focused predominantly on the
socio-economic circumstances of ordinary people who live in South African
cities, specifically street vendors engaged in the informal economy. She works
in various media, including painting, drawing and site-specific installations
and more recently has turned the camera lens on herself. Khan has also been extensively involved as a
muralist, mural coordinator and researcher in various mural projects in the
KwaZulu-Natal region. She occasionally writes and curates.
