Sekoto was born in 1913 in Botshabelo, moving as a child with his parents to Limpopo Province. He studied to become a teacher and taught at Seshego School on Polokwane, but in1939 decided to pursue a full-time career as an artist and moved to Johannesburg. Over the following eight years he lived in Sophiatown, Distrit six in Cape Town and thereafter, Eastwood in Pretoria. Many of his works dating from this period (1939 to 1947) are on show in this exhibition.
